Hemingway is a fantastic author, one of a very strange breed of authors. He is probably the most manly man ever, and I thought your clip from Midnight in Paris was quite humorous, but a rather good example of what he was probably like in real life. Hemingway had very clearly defined views on what a man should be, how he should act, what he should think, indeed that is what all of his novels focused on. But I have some questions on what he felt on other subjects. What did he think about suicide? In this paper, Robert Jordan does not take ‘the easy way out’ because he sees the manly way to go; enduring pain to kill enemy officers. But would it ever be acceptable, in Hemingway’s mind, to commit suicide? Would it fulfill his moral code? Are women and men equally deserving of sacrifice? These are some questions that are probably answered in other books by Hemingway, but your paper brought them to mind.
